About Me
Hi! My name is Shreya, and I’m a maths tutor with 16 years of experience.
I want students to let go of the horrible emotional reaction that you can get from maths. The "I will NEVER understand this", the "My brain just doesn't work that way", the "I'm stupid" or the "I'm rubbish with numbers" are all self-deprecating thoughts that inhibit real progress. I truly believe that EVERYONE is capable of doing maths confidently and accurately.
With older students I tend to let them lead the way in terms of what we cover during our sessions. With younger students and students who need more support, I plan and deliver a more structured lesson. I use the ‘spaced repetition’ technique to encourage the transfer of information from short term to long term memory. I often get the loud, "OOOOHHHH" moments when a concept has finally clicked with a student! Usually it's as simple as explaining something in a different way or looking at a topic from a different angle.
I have my own revision techniques which I used at school to achieve four A*s at A-Level and 8 A*s at GCSE, which I pass on to my students. I am able to teach both maths and further maths courses at GCSE and A-Level.
I also have experience teaching primary school maths, 11+ exam preparation (I sat those exams myself!), and students with dyscalculia, dyspraxia and dyslexia.
I have a 1st Class Honours Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a Post Graduate Qualification in Physics. I was awarded a place to study a PhD in Bionanophysics, but in 2019 by life was changed when I developed ME/CFS and became a wheelchair user. So now, maths tutoring is how I earn while still working within the limits my health allows.
